Turn-based strategy games have historically made awkward transitions from PC to console, disallowing the micromanaging precision necessary in the genre. Console controls are much better suited for other categories of gameplay. Civilization Revolution, however, has managed to successfully transition the platform gap and bring us traditional Civilization gameplay from a console perspective. While gameplay has been dramatically simplified in consideration of console controls, the game still offers intensive strategic gameplay that Civilization fans expect.
As one of many different world leaders, you will cultivate your civilization through technological, cultural and military revolutions along your way to win one of four different victories: Domination, Cultural, Technological or Economic. While more difficult, maintaining diplomatic relationships will allow for ways of dominating the new world other than through military means. With the myriad paths to victory, the game offers extensive replay value, but traditional Civilization fans may still find gameplay rather stunted. Once one of the four victories are accomplished within any civilization, your game ends rather abruptly without the opportunity to continue watching your civilization grow. This is only a minor concession to the graphical and control execution of a Civilization made especially for consoles.
If you chose to take your civilization into the multiplayer space, be prepared to be a bit more patient and a bit less strategic. Online gameplay is slow and tedious and doesn't allow for the quick strategic gameplay allowed in single player mode and with the simplified gameplay of Revolution, the intensity of multiplayer mode is lost.
Gladly, we can still be grateful that turn-based strategy gaming has been revolutionized to the point where we can play a Civilization game on a console without wanting to throw the controller out the window.
