Order Up!

Nintendo serves up yet another cooking game, but this time with a twist of entrepreneur.

by Sarah Schutz Mail Icon

The Nintendo Wii serves up yet another culinary minigame themed game, but unlike Cooking Mama before it, the cooking in Order Up! takes place in your journey to own, run and cook in the fanciest 5 star restaurant on Porta Bella island, making this cooking game more than being stuck at a stove.

Completing the game won't take you very long at all and the cooking challenges, testing your timing and Wii remote controls, are simple enough for the most inexperienced gamer, but will still offer enough entertainment for us veterans. As a career chef, you hone your skills at the local burger joint and work your way up the culinary ladder, gaining expertise in typical Diner, Italian Mexican and French cuisines as you open up respective culinary establishments on Porta Bella island. In order to open new restaurants and gain culinary acclaim, you must successfully cook each restaurant's standard recipes and Chef's Specials while also ensuring that the restaurant is up to Health Codes and that your specials please the Food Critic's palette. Each restaurant also draws picky eaters who will command that their orders are spiced according to their preferences. You will have to listen carefully to your customers and assure that each order goes out according to spec. While unlocking and creating each new recipe keeps the game progressing, you'll soon sadly find that cooking a burrito feels strangely familiar to fixing up a plate of gnocchi. The game quickly becomes repetitive especially when visited every other day (in your restaurateur world) by the Health Inspector who commands you to wash a pile of plates. And several other intermittent minigames just seem to be insulting your intelligence, or gaming capability. Feel free to play on a higher difficulty to slightly ramp up the difficulty of executing recipes by removing the idiot-proof timer, but the game remains the most casual of casual games. And you'll far too quickly be the Gordon Ramsey of Porta Bella island. As you progress, you'll also be able to purchase new kitchen appliances and more helpful Sous Chefs that are sure to make your job that much easier as you work to make each of your four establishments a four star success. Just don't expect to create any new neurological gaming pathways. It all feels a bit too similar to the gameplay we've seen before wrapped in a cutesy restaurant simulation exterior. But for a pleasing bargain price, it's worth a casual whirl on your Wii.

Making up some fake burgers! Mmmmmm.
