Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Samus' arm gets the wii-remote.

by Sarah Schutz Mail Icon

In case you didn’t notice from the barely existent advertising and hype for the latest Metroid game, it was, in fact, released in August. I have, sadly, never appreciated the Metroid series. As one who focuses on plot and connection to the main characters, I have always found it somewhat detached, though appreciated a female lead whose strengths were in her armor. Metroid Prime: Corruption changed my mind . . . for a while. In Metroid Prime: Corruption you again play as Samus, out to save the universe, this time from nasty Space pirates and Dark Samus who is corrupting the galaxies. Samus’ Hunter friends become corrupted and Samus herself incorporates Phazon corruption into her suit. Phazon hypermode becomes Samus’ newfound power, but is also her downfall if she doesn’t maintain control over it. The game leads Samus as she rids the galaxies of corruption in search for Dark Samus.

You’ll either love or hate the Wii’s game controls. Most of us first-person-shooter fans appreciate sitting back on our couches controlling the action with minimal movement. The use of the Wii-remote forces you to get more involved in the action, making different movements to grapple, open doors and most obviously shoot. While the controls take awhile to get used to, I found them to be streamlined and addictive after awhile. The movements are quite intuitive and allow you to shoot precisely and quickly. Now, don’t get me wrong. Overall I think I prefer traditional FPS controls that don’t give me what I call “Wii Shoulder.” My body just couldn’t take it. But it was a nice change of pace and quite a novelty.

The sky level has the some great gameplay

My enthusiasm with the game was driven by gameplay and graphics that were quite appealing considering they don’t live up to the next gen graphics of the PS3 or the Xbox 360. This last installment of the Metroid series also seemed a bit more linear than others, keeping me interested in getting to the next mission. I was about ready to claim myself as the newest Metroid groupie, but then I reached the end you must backtrack through nearly the entire game in order to get to the final boss. I am a completionist at heart, but these Metroid games have always left me frustrated to no end since that 100% always seems so unattainable, or at least annoying as hell to achieve. I had hoped that this installment might allow for a more casual play-through so that those of us who have not yet fallen entirely in love with Samus, might just get to know her on a more friendly level. I begrudgingly completed the tasks, but will forever hold those lost hours against the series. I wouldn’t go so far as to regret my time spent with the game. It was the first real gaming (aside from Twilight Princess) that I spent with my Wii and for that I am grateful. I hope the Wii continues to remember the gamers.
