Perhaps I'm just easier to impress these days when my expectation for quality Wii games is so low. Or maybe this time I allowed my affection for Steven Spielberg affect my objective journalistic perspective, but I found myself adoring this little puzzler right off the bat, at soon found out that this game isn't nearly as "little" as I first thought. With seemingly endless gameplay and endless replayability, Boom Blox will keep casual gamers, hardcore puzzle gamers and gaming physics fanatics enthralled for hours, days, weeks . . .
Think Jenga on uppers: Boom Blox requires you to solve level after level, each with a different objective or methodology. Using various projectiles and explosive trickery, you must clear each level by accurately flinging your Wiimote. Boom Blox manages to shine where so many Wii games have waffled and makes precise and fluid use of the motion controls. Intuitive from the get-go, learning how to master your moves doesn't take long at all, but using your brains to clear each complex level will prove much more satisfyingly deceptive. The satisfying use of the Wiimote shooting from every which direction matched with the realistically fascinating physics of the levels themselves will keep you replaying each level until you achieve the coveted gold medal. Mission mode introduces you to a lighthearted, if ever too cutesy, story mode that will have you busting bloxs to execute specific goals. Explore is (duh) a little more open, allowing you to experiment with the various objectives and game modes, while still attempting to climb to the top of reigning Boom Blox stardom. Multiplayer modes ensure that like any quality Wii game, Boom Blox will be a party hit. My only advice is that if you drink and aim, please, please, please, wear your wrist strap. Even if not under the influence, wielding the Wiimote and flinging projectiles with extreme force will result in a broken television screen or a wailing pet. These things are not toys. Ok, maybe they are, but please flail responsibly. Finally for those creative, building types, the Create mode allows you to create your own levels and play with the beautifully executed Havok engine. Physics should always be this much fun.
For the casual gamer picking up something new or the hardcore gamer desperately seeking another Wii addiction, Boom Blox may be the answer. Dangerously addictive and offering endless gameplay, especially with promised future downloads, Boom Blox will keep your Wii humming for quite some time. But be careful. You may sit down for a quick round and find yourselves playing far into the night or slacking on your other responsibilities because you just can't bring yourselves to stop.
