Eye of Judgment

Being a nerd has never been so three dimensional.

by Sarah Schutz Mail Icon

There has always been a tense division between RPG gamers who play with cards and books and models and those who choose to play more high-tech video games. Some have seen video games as a less pure form of strategic gaming, while others have wandered into both worlds. I am, obviously, preferential towards video games, but have flirted with an addiction to Magic the Gathering, but always found myself returning to the controller. Eye of Judgment manages to successfully bring the two worlds together in a way that is equally addictive, strategic and visually gratifying.

The Eye of Judgment bundle comes packaged with the Playstation Eye, a starter deck, a booster pack, the game (obviously) and the game mat. The game does take a bit of setup and it will benefit both you and your sanity for the game to be placed in a clear, lit location. Otherwise the camera may have problems reading the cards. Other than that, the camera use is fairly simple and intuitive. The game itself is based on creature cards and spell cards that you put into play strategically in order to defeat your opponent’s cards. The learning curve is a bit steep and takes a bit of time to learn, but once you do, the game becomes quickly addictive. The battle of the creatures and spells is played out in stunning visuals on your screen, while you are given the freedom to interact with the cards in a more tactile manner. With the advent of this new crossover technology, one would hope that we would have a simple and engaging tutorial to ease you into gameplay. Unfortunately the creativity and technical savvy of the production team didn’t make it to the instructional, so players are forced to endure a far too long, far too boring instructional video. An in-game tutorial against the computer would have been more effective than forcing me to replay an instructional video 8 times because I kept losing focus playing with my cards.

Sadly, these models have no idea what they are playing.

All the initial learning process aside, the game is near perfect for its purpose. The game includes 2-player, one-player and online battles, along with a shorter creature battle that allows you to survey the power of your cards. The true charm of the game is found in the 2-player that brings the pure form of strategy card games to the next gen world. Eye of Judgment brings back the two-player, reminding us what it was like to have a friend over to play a video game as opposed to meeting friend in cyber-Space. Many critics have argued that the game is flawed because it does not offer a complete single player campaign or smooth enough online gameplay, but I contend that they are missing the point. Eye of Judgment successfully integrates the charm of card strategy games with the graphical power of the PS3, bringing a whole new population of gamers into the video gaming world. The cards’ collectibility, short game time and infinite gameplay time will make it a staple for any PS3 owner’s collection.
