Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

The series lives on

by Venessa Chen Mail Icon

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is the latest in the series. The scenario takes place in the futuristic year of 2047 during the Third Tiberium War. Basically, the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) is at war with the Brotherhood of Nod. Both are trying to destroy each other. Each believes that they are correct. Whichever side you choose, it doesn’t matter to me, it’s your opinion. There is also a third faction, the Scrin, aliens who have come to harvest all of the Tiberium on Earth.

I had never played the Command & Conquer franchise before and I hardly touch RTS games, so I didn’t know what to expect. Turn Based Strategy games tend to bore me slightly because of the slow pace; however, C&C has fast gameplay and enough action to keep you entertained.

The gameplay is essentially, collect Tiberium, build tanks, train soldiers; sounds boring, yet it can keep you staring at the screen for hours. You can build behemoth tanks to storm an enemy base or big guns to guard your base. Troops can occupy buildings to use as turrets too. My favourite is to use the Grenadiers to blast Nod troops out of buildings; it’s fun to see them just fly out when only two grenades went in. Constantly bombarding your enemy with torrents of Mammoth Tanks may work, but sometimes the quickest and easiest way is to use GDI’s equivalent of the RAF (USAF for Americans). I tend to play defensive first, build up a nice back up in case my offense fails, and then rush towards the opponent with the hoards of artillery that I have. After playing a couple of campaigns, and getting the hang of the game you learn to be flexible and versatile and use your units in different ways.

Life is Campaigns are a long and hard journey. It may seem easy at first, but then there are some pretty frustrating missions that will have you shouting expletives in no time. Though you may be put off by the difficulty at times, you will never get bored of the campaign because the missions have varied difficulties and scenarios, always something new. Another very important thing I forgot to mention, as said before, there are three factions, and in Campaign you can play all three, each with a unique storyline. Also, the cut scenes ain’t half bad either.

After playing all the campaigns, or not, there is still the Skirmish mode; yet more to play. If you are a noob, like yours truly, you can play on the easy setting, but if you are the pro-gamer-who-has-been-playing-C&C-since-the-dawn-of-time-and-busted-all-three-campaigns-in-six-hours person, there are several hard settings you can choose from.

I haven’t forgotten about Multiplayer mode. It’s just like Skirmish, but against a real person on the other end of the telephone line. But the thing that sets it apart is the Battlecast feature. This allows players to watch any game in real-time and for someone to deliver a commentary in real-time. It’s nice that EA developed something that would make this game unique compared to similar RTS games.

The graphics aren’t the most detailed or realistic looking, but it is sufficient which means that if your computer isn’t exactly the biggest and baddest gaming rig, you can still play, so we can all share the joy (yay!). The sound and voice-overs were quite good. When units die, they scream or cry desperately for help, rather realistic. Soundtrack is decent, not Hans’ quality, doing well for a game nonetheless.

Just buy it, its value for money is great. It’ll take you some time to plow through the campaigns and then play skirmishes, and if you are utterly bored, you can always go online and play multiplayer.

Very addictive; many different missions.

No tutorial for Nod and Scrin
