City Life 2008

Another take on a gaming archetype

If you like Sim City, this COULD be a game for you. It takes a new spin on the game. You have to avoid conflicts between the different types of people, while maintaining a positive bank balance. You are given many choices of maps to start your city and regions to start it on. The challenge is similar to Sim City in ways that you have to unlock buildings and other things to make your city better for the citizens. The difference is that you have to unlock parts of the map also, in order to expand your city. Here lies the challenge. It is easy to go into the red while building up the city and keeping the neighborhoods seporated.

This is not for your average player, as it is more challenging. I know that, for me, Sim City didn't take too long to beat but this is a bit more complex. You are given different businesses for the various different types of people, for them to work and play. The housing is the same for all of the people. As your city grows, you can click on each individual business or home and see how many people either live or are employed at the house, what kind of people it draws (artists, blue collars, ect). It also tells you what the fee for having an abandoned building or vacant building is for the city.

The information section that is supposed to help you lead your city with ease is not so easy at all. It will give you general information, but will not allow you to fix it in that screen. You have to hunt down the specific home or business and take care of it manually. I do, however, like how it breaks down what businesses are doing the best, dollar for dollar, on the main screen.

There does, however, always seem to be a shortage of money and housing for all the residents. The safety of your residents seems to be okay for quite some time, because you have to unlock police stations. The education of your citizens also seems unimportant to the plot, because again, you have to wait to unlock it. So, you have complaints about the lack of training facilities for job advancement, and you can't fix it. So, you get annoyed.

Um, I'd like to live there.

Out of 10 I would give this a 7. The game doesn't explain much in its tutorial and the "scenerio" section is not as challenging as the free style mode. The graphics are decent. The announcements that inform you of problems in the city are not very helpful, but have great graphics.
