Advance Wars is most definitely an acquired gaming taste, but if you are one of the lucky gamers who has a taste for the challenging quirkiness of this strategic turn-based battle game, it can be a joy. For those unaware, Advance Wars is a game in which you strategically move troops on a miniature map in efforts to take control of cities and factories, to build more troops to defeat your opponents. While simple in theory, the game involves strategic diligence not for the faint of heart.
Advance Wars has never really been about the plotline. Dialogue is most often clicked through rapidly to get to the battles. And each battle can last upwards of a couple hours. The storylines in previous installments have all remained lighthearted and appropriately minimally involving. Days of Ruin, however, takes a dark post-apocolyptic turn that seems slightly inappropriate for the series. The more depressing storyline doesn’t quite fit with the comic book graphics and minimal room (or interest) for storyline.
The Debbie Downer plotline aside, most other aspects of the game deliver the solid Advance War gameplay we know and love. New in this version are slightly more advanced graphics, but with Advance Wars, we know its really about the game’s strategy. The Tactics room in Days of Ruin offers advice on how best to handle to strategically intense battles. Online gameplay and the map editor allow for multiplayer and more customized battles.
Fans of Advance Wars will no doubt pick up the game regardless of what I have to say. For those who have yet to discover the wonders of the series, it is not for the casual gamer and may take some getting used to, but once an Advance Wars fan, always an Advance Wars fan. And forever a Nintendo classic.
