Katie (K.T.) Schutz is my (dot’s) sister. Yes, I realize this is nepotism, but a non-gamer as my sister? This had to be remedied. Katie and I grew up without video games of our own because our parents didn’t want our brains to rot in front of a television – though we were allowed our Apple IIgs games and a couple of clunky Game Boys. While I went on to develop a gaming addiction, K.T. never caught the gaming bug. I tried to get her into DS gaming, but really only hooked her on Nintendogs. Since then I noticed her affinity for Smooth Moves at a friend’s house, so I got to thinking . . . and now K.T., a new Wii owner considering a Xbox 360 purchase (so she can play games online with me), is hooked. K.T. is a social worker in Racine, Wisconsin, fighting the good fight.
CDG: What type of games do you play?
Katie: Well my sister (dot) gave me her old Nintendo DS about a year ago. It was then that I was introduced to Nintendogs and was able to raise a pug named Lola. Other than that my experiences with gaming has been limited to an old Game Boy and occasionally renting the Nintendo game system from Blockbuster.
CDG: What attracts you to the Wii games?
Katie: I like that the Wii games are more interactive than other systems. You don’t just sit down and press buttons. I enjoy moving around my living room and looking like an idiot.
CDG: Favorite game?
Katie: I would have to say Smooth Moves. This was the very first game I played on Wii. What can I say I like picking people’s noses and shaving a sheep.
CDG: What do you think of the perception that video gaming is a guy’s thing?
Katie: I think that is ridiculous. Girls are obviously better gamers than guys. I do really like the cute pick remote that you can buy for the Wii. (KIDDING)
CDG: Do you play to win or play for fun?
Katie: I PLAY TO WIN. I recently discovered that I am very mean while playing video games.
CDG: How often do you play?
Katie: In the past I rarely ever played video games. Then dot introduced me to Super Paper Mario and it changed my life. No really I was having dreams about it!
CDG: Do you enjoy playing alone or with other people?
Katie: I usually allow by boyfriend Tom to watch while I play however, it is very difficult for me to give up the controller unless it’s a two player game then I guess it’s ok.
CDG: Who do you play with?
Katie: See above. And my friends Scott and Tiffany who will do up the Mario Kart.
CDG: Are there other games you are looking forward to playing?
Katie: YES. I am waiting to buy Super Mario Galaxy and I hear the word on the street is that there is now a Guitar Hero for Wii.
CDG: What console do you play on?
Katie: Wii
CDG: Do you play portable games? (e.g. Nintendo ds or psp)
Katie: I play DS every once in awhile.
CDG: What games do you own?
Katie: Nintendogs, Smooth Moves. Super Paper Mario, Mario Party 8, and Mario Kart Double Dash. I guess I really like Mario!
CDG: Do you play any online games?
Katie: No not really.
CDG: What other kind of leisure activities do you enjoy?
Katie: I am a movie fanatic. I also have TV shows that I am obsessed with such as House and Grey's Anatomy.
