About CDG

As a female gamer, I always believe that the previous adjective “female,” could be removed from my gamer definition. I didn’t think I was one of the boys either, but rather believed that I am simply a gamer. When I began writing about games and researching more about the industry and culture, I realized just how male-driven the gaming world actually is. Gaming websites with “Babes” sections, referencing the gamer as “he” were not a place for me. I felt peripheral and unnecessary and it did not feel good. So I gathered a few people to help me fill in the void.

We at Chicksdiggames.com decided there needed to be a space on the web where women gamers could form a community and share their perspective on the industry. Most women gaming sites do the same thing that many of the mainstream sites do by fitting women into a very small category of gamers, limiting their understanding of what women play and how they play. CDG is a place where women and men gamers alike can come as you are to share a unique perspective on games. We hope to not only bring women gamers together, but introduce the industry to what women gamers really want. We hope to look at games that, like women gamers, aren’t given the attention they deserve and seek to understand gaming culture in a different light. We do not intend to be a review site with women at the helm, but only hope to look a bit more critically at the discussion surrounding gaming and hopefully create a more culturally and socially relevant discussion. Women make up a growing number of the gaming population, yet we are still lacking a space to bring our perspective to the gaming culture.

Sarah Schutz

Hi. I’m Sarah Schutz aka “dot.” The “dot” is my old-school gamertag when three letters were enough, derived from the “dot” in every url and from Dorothy of Oz, mostly because I am generally in the middle of everything, but always trying to get back home . . . usually in red sneakers. And just like my trusty World of Warcraft warlock, I inflict Damage Over Time. I’m a tomboy, often found riding my bike or reading a book when not gaming (which is rare). I wear (red) stilettos and carry hot sauce in my pocket. As a child my parents never let me play video games, believing they would rot my brain. I would go to friends’ houses every chance I got to play Nintendo. During high school my passion for video games took a side seat to my passion for Academia. I studied 20th century British Literature at Northwestern University and rediscovered my addiction to video games during my sophomore year when I skipped my first class to continue playing Diablo II. PC games were my gateway drug and before I knew it I had all consoles in my possession.

During college and graduate school I looked at the cultural implications of video games, specifically MMORPGS. I write reviews and criticism for business and pleasure. For me, video games are art, entertainment and culture. I enjoy looking at them from every angle and I believe as a woman I am given a unique opportunity to understand the industry from yet another scenic outlook. I’ve written for mainstream and girl gaming sites alike, but believe there is still a void for female gamers, so am seeking to fill it. I am a girl. And I like video games.

When I get a break from the world of advertising I find myself studying up on the best practices with css. (IE go to hell) I’m a tough guy that loves puppies and kittens and will kick your butt at a game of Galaga.

I am never satisfied with the final look of ChicksDigGames so please be patient with my ADD. Dot seems to cut me some slack.

I’m not one for words, but I excited to be working on this project and accept any feedback you girls want to throw my way.

Yo! Jessi Prouse here, a.k.a. “Tails” in the sprawling gaming verse for reasons that will remain the kind of mystery you ponder then forget forever. I’m a poet, a writer, a gamer, and the kind of chick who thinks wearing glasses are sexy. And they are! My dream job is combining gaming and writing (nudge nudge wink wink game companies) via plots, character development, and player interaction that bring you back for more. Until I manage to sail that boat, you can find me logging too many hours on too many games but loving it all the same. I’m a college kid 3 boring classes from breaking out of Michigan with a B.A. in Writing and hopefully a future with a whee bit of money in it.

It’s not all games for this chicka though *audience gasps!*. Give me a long walk in the woods at 2am or even something less weird, like hanging with friends. Games are a social aspect for me, something to share with a friend and break out at a party. Mario Party (insert # here) makes a great drinking game. Social aspect or not, I love any game that helps prolong this love affair, this addiction, this endless diversion from the oh so grand life.

Bill

Hey there. I'm Bill. I also go by 5pr0ck37 (sprocket for the non-l337 speaking folks). It's mainly a reference to by affinity to bicycling. But that's a completely different subject altogether.

I'm a gamer. And an aging one at that. I've been one as far back as I can recall. From Atari, Intellivision and Colecovision to the NES and beyond. My family even had one of the old yellow Pong machines back in the day. Most of my childhood memories revolve around either videogames, Legos or Calvin & Hobbes like misadventures in the nearby forest preserves on my bike. I'm the type of person who can tell you that the first three games purchased in 1987 for the NES. Gauntlet, The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania, but I am incapable of remembering what I ate for lunch yesterday. I owe a lot of who I am today to the adventures I had as Link and Simon Belmont. And then there was Dragon Warrior. That game single-handedly ensured thousands of my dollars were to end up in the Square-Enix pit of RPGs. Games for me have always been a way to escape the dullness sometimes associated with the mundane day to day.

These days aren't a lot different I suppose. While I totally admit to missing the boat on the whole MMORPG thing, I don't think it would really have been my thing anyway. I enjoy more diversity and the outside too much! The closest I came was Diablo II, and it's non-stop pre-1.10 patch Cow Level grinding. Sometimes I miss it, but then I remember that I have a 240 average to keep up on Wii Sports Bowling. I've become a more social game player these days, focusing on Guitar Hero, fighting, golf and other sorts of in person social gaming. That's not to say that I don't love a good RPG now and again.
Speaking of which, and I am loathe to admit this... I want a PS3. Not for the flash-whiz-bang and all that is coming out. No, I want it for Disgaea 3. Nothing says fun like a 200+ hour strategy RPG. I am sure my fiancée is going to just love when that hits the US shores!

And finally, I am happy to have been asked to join the Chicks Dig Games world. Even if it means I get to be the token whipping-boy. I love what this site stands for, and really hope that the industry takes notice that girls, ladies, women love games too. Games of all types, not just Nintendogs and Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour.

Fickity Twists

As we all wander through this life we gather dust. I, having traveled from my homeland of Canada to wed my husband, now reside in the Indiana. Thus, due to humidity, have not gathered as much dust as most. Some of the dust got blown off by the blustering winds of Chicago, while I worked there, the rest has turned into a soggy residue due to the intense humidity of the Indiana summers.
I play various games that catch my interest, though most of them I tend to try out first in Beta, sort of like renting before you buy. I find most of my days are not as game oriented as they were a year ago, but I still have certain likes and dislikes that I am not afraid of letting others know about. I am completely obessive with the games I play. I play them until they scream for mercy! Or until my fingers wont take anymore. Good game or bad, I will play it to death. Especially if I have purchased it. Plus, I don't like to just walk away from a game that has not been finished. It's sort of a pet peeve I guess.
